Calculate results saves the study, then calculates from the saved data. If it can't produce a trustworthy result, it stops and says why. Your entries stay saved. See also Calculating results.

Calculate results stops with marked rows#

What you see. Resolve the marked rows before analysis., and Data opens with Fix errors on each problem row. A summary above the grid names the rows, for example Input issues in rows 3, 14., and each problem is described in red under its row.

Why. An included row has a blank result, text such as <0.5 or hemolyzed, a number in the other numeric convention, or a missing ID.

Recover.

  1. If a notice says rows are missing a value, use its button. Exclude n rows excludes the blank rows with a reason and removes rows with nothing entered. When all of them are empty, the button is Remove n empty rows. See Blank results.
  2. For each remaining row, type the correction in the marked cell, or choose Fix errors, which states the problem at the top, and correct the value or exclude the row with a reason. See Corrections and exclusions.
  3. Choose Calculate results again.

Row messages are listed in Validation messages.

Calculate results asks for settings first#

What you see. Before calculating results, fill in: … with a list of fields, and Set up opens. The study header's main button reads Finish set up. The engine can also say, for example, Enter an analyte and a unit in Set up.

Recover. Fill in the listed fields on Set up, for example the unit, an assigned value, claimed reference limits or the lots. Then calculate again.

Calculate results stops with a design message#

What you see. A message about the design, often naming the level. For example:

  • You need at least 2 days, the same number of runs each day, and the same number of replicates (at least 2) in each run. (multi-day precision)
  • Enter paired results for at least two specimens before analysis. (method comparison)
  • Enter at least one included result before analysis.

Why. The data don't have the structure the calculation needs. The chapter for your study type gives its design rules. See Study methods.

Recover.

  • Add missing measurements, or exclude extras with a reason, to complete the design.
  • Make day, run, replicate and level labels consistent. 1 and Day 1 are different days.
  • Check exclusions. Excluded rows don't count toward minimum numbers.
  • If your design is different, use the study type that fits it.

Results are marked out of date#

What you see. A banner says the results are out of date, and the button reads Recalculate results. Results may also say the acceptance limits changed after this calculation.

Why. Results come from the data as saved when they were calculated. Any later edit to rows, settings or limits makes them out of date.

Recover. Choose Recalculate results. If you are viewing an earlier calculation, choose Show latest calculation.

A limit shows Undecided or Not applicable#

What you see. The study is Undecided and a limit is Undecided with a reason in the Why panel, or a limit is Not applicable.

Why. Common reasons:

ReasonWhat to do
The limit's unit differs from the study's, often after a unit changeCorrect the limit and recalculate.
Only 1 independent specimenAdd independent specimens or materials. Replicates of one specimen count as one.
The estimate could not be calculatedThe results say why.
The limit is for a different level (Not applicable)Make the limit's level match your level labels exactly.
A method or instrument comparison has no limit for each specimenSet the allowable difference for each specimen in Acceptance limits on Set up, then recalculate.
Fewer than 5 specimensAdd specimens. A comparison needs at least 5 independent specimens, a reagent lot comparison 2.
A specimen can't be evaluatedSpecimen decisions names it and why, for example a missing result or a concentration no limit segment covers. Enter the result, exclude the specimen with a reason, or extend the limits, then recalculate.

See Criterion outcomes and Acceptance limits.

Someone else saved the study while you were editing#

What you see after Save changes. A notice says who saved, when, and which of their changes are kept. Your edits appear on top of their version, not yet saved. It may point out values you both changed.

Why. A colleague, or another of your tabs, saved the study after this page opened it.

What to do. Check the places the notice names, then choose Save changes again. See When someone else saved first.

When calculating, signing off or importing. Calculating and importing save your edits first, so you get the same notice. Check it and save. Without unsaved edits, or when signing off, a red banner says another version was saved. Choose Save a copy of my edits if you want a copy of the page, then reload and try again.

Other calculation messages#

  • The saved study has values that need fixing. Open the study, fix and save them, then calculate again.
  • A precision study linked for the Deming λ has changed since this study was calculated. … You calculated again without changing anything after a linked precision study changed. The earlier calculation used the result that was current then, so it isn't returned again. A calculation after any other change still runs with the linked result and leaves the Deming limits Undecided. To decide them, on Set up, in Method comparison, choose the current results or another basis for λ, then save and calculate again. See Method comparison.
  • The spread is too small to calculate reliably. The results differ by amounts too small for the arithmetic. Check for extreme values or unit errors.
